Create your own Museum

It’s time to get creative in the play corner, creating your own class museum.

Back in the classroom it’s time to support your class to create their museum of old things.

Find a space where children can develop their ideas around displaying their collections and making a museum. Why not transform a play corner, setting up tables to suggest a shop and entrance area. An easel could suggest the addition of information posters and a till would support children to set up a museum shop / admission counter.

Further tables and empty shelves could provide a simple layout  to inspire children to fill with their class collection. Opportunities for writing labels and adding artwork could provide some experiences for a curatorial role in a museum.

With the addition of play food children could set up a museum café too.

Why not have an activity station elsewhere in the classroom where children can create brown signs, admission tickets, labels, posters or leaflets to encourage further creativity ?

A craft corner could allow children to create objects to sell in a museum shop.

To support you with creating a museum, Tees Valley Museums can provide:

  • A variety of loans boxes that will link to a range of EYFS themes
  • Localised images from the collections that can support artwork for a gallery
  • Museum “infrastructure” including display boards, label holders and sign boards
  • Labels for children with different roles and opportunities for children to wear.

It will be likely that EYFS children will work effectively using blank paper and card. A series of templates, if required, are available here.
