Dan Smith

Dan was born in Stockton and has lived in Washington, Durham and Newcastle (where he went to University). He’s also lived a little further afield – Sumatra, Sierra Leone, and Brazil! His roots are here though – his great-grandfather was Lord Lawson of Beamish! Dan now lives in Newcastle. He has published many books for young readers, including stories set in World War II and Viking times.

Writing, storymaking or published books

I have published many books for young readers and books for adults.

My young reader titles are:

Below zero
Big game
Boy X
My brother’s secret
My friend the enemy
She Wolf
The invasion of crooked oak
The Beast of Harwood Forest
The Horror of Dunwick Farm
Nisha’s War

Approach to writing

Sometimes story ideas pop into my head, sometimes I get ideas while reading other books or watching films/tv, or sometimes I go looking for stories by reading articles, searching for unusual news snippets etc.

Booking and practical information

All writers can be booked through the Education Officer with whom you have booked an object. They will help you sort out dates for a planning meeting and the practicalities of all the sessions with students. Schools taking part in Literacy Loans will need to be happy to use zoom, teams, google classrooms or another equivalent secure online platform.

The standard fee for one class to have three 40 minute sessions with our writers is £200. We may be able to help with the costs for schools with high levels of Pupil Premium funding or seeking to address specific issues with writing.
