Viking helmet

The Vikings came from the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Denmark. They attacked and settled in Britain between AD 793 and 1066. This Viking helmet was found in Yarm in Stockton-on-Tees and would have been worn as armour. This suggests one of the many battles that took place between the Vikings and Saxons, as the Saxons fought to defend their people, buildings and treasures, may have taken place here.

Viking helmet

Viking helmets were usually riveted together, like this one, from pieces of iron and, contrary to popular belief, had no horns! A ‘spectacle’ shaped eye and nose protector has been riveted to the lower front of the helmet. An ‘aventail’ or curtain of chainmail may have been attached to the lower rim of the helmet as punched holes can be seen.
