Young Producers

Young Producers are a group of 16-25 year olds who have a say and plan events and exhibitions at our museums.

We currently have two active Young Producers groups – based at Hartlepool Art Gallery and Preston Park Museum – and will soon be recruiting Young Producers along the Stockton and Darlington Railway route and in Middlesbrough.

To find out more about the programme, and to apply, click on the links below.

Young Producers are a group of 16-25 year olds who have a say and plan events and exhibitions at our museums.

We want young people to be at the heart of what we do and Young Producers offers a real opportunity to get involved with programming, planning, future developments, collections and learning more about careers in our museums and the wider creative sector.

The Young Producers have put on events from Silent Disco’s to exhibitions.

Young people who join Young Producers:

*Meet once a month in person at their venue with staff, to discuss projects and events they would like to be involved in or make happen.

*Take part in a once a month visit to another creative venue, to learn about careers in the creative industries across the north east.

*Take part in training sessions provided by Children North East in subjects such as youth voice, public speaking, team working and building confidence.

*Learn how to produce their own events and exhibitions, supported by venue staff.

*Receive full travel expenses and can apply to an access fund to support taking part in the programme where finances may be a barrier.

*Meet likeminded peers to make friends and connections.

Do you want to find out more about working in the creative industries? Are you interested in organising events and exhibitions? We’d love to welcome you to our Young Producers groups.

Before you apply, make sure you can:

* Commit to attending a Young Producers meeting in person, every month (meetings should be no longer than 2 hours and are held at the museum site you apply to).

* Commit to attending a career focused opportunity once a month (this could be an off-site visit to another cultural venue, a shadowing opportunity at a museum, a training day, etc).

* Be interested in having your voice heard and sharing ideas.

* Be able to work as part of a team with the other members of the group.

Please apply for the role by clicking on the link below.

If you require any help with completing the application, please contact Heather Minto, Children and Young People Officer:

We will support young people who live within 20 miles of a venue with transport costs or assistance to and from a Young Producers group. Unfortunately, if you live further away we won’t be able to support you with travel expenses but consider contacting a museum closer to where you live to find out if they have a similar programme you can join.

Young Producers is a very hands-on programme and, although we have tried a hybrid approach, we feel that this doesn’t give you the best experience. Joining us in person is much more rewarding and lets you meet the other Young Producers and explore our collections.

We support Young Producers in every way we can. We will fund all travel expenses and often book travel in advance of a meeting so that you don’t need to claim it back.

At every meeting, we have refreshments (mostly pizza!) as we appreciate you might miss an evening meal to attend the group.

We also have an Access Fund to support you to purchase something you may need to attend (e.g. a warm jacket for an outdoor visit). The application process for this is a short form which can be obtained by emailing

If there is anything else we can do to support you, please let us know as we want to make Young Producers as accessible as possible to everyone.

We’re a very flexible group and appreciate everyone has lots of commitments, especially young people. If you can’t make every session, that’s fine, but please let us know.

Everyone is welcome at Young Producers. We welcome a range of young people, from those still at school to those who have graduated from university. Some are interested in planning events, some come just to socialise or to find out more about the creative industry.

We welcome young people from every background and meet in accessible venues.

Museums are for everyone, so please do apply today as we’d love to meet you.

Young Producers groups are held in the evenings once a month. Each group meeting lasts for two hours and typically runs from 5pm until 7pm.

Young Producers meet one Saturday a month to visit a different cultural venue in the north east to learn about different job roles and career pathways. This Saturday varies dependent upon the site we visit.
